Image by Ralph Hogaboom: HQX Design

What Is FAWM And Why It’s Important?

If you’ve never heard of February Album Writing Month before, there’s no better time to dip your toes into the mildy addictive - music-making merry-go-round that takes place on the FAWM website. I wonder if, perhaps, in 20 years people will talk about FAWM in the same way they do about those who take an annual dip in the freezing waters of the North Sea, and annual cheese rollers.

The challenge is to write 14 songs(1) during February, though the actual “challenge” is what you make of it. This year will be my sixth taking part in the challenge. Last year I finished completed just three songs, so this year I’m hoping to do better. Far more important than “winning”, is “succeeding”, that is, being excited by whatever I happen to produce, be it on my own or with collaborators.

For me, there are no requisite tools to do the job, as long as you’re aware of the scope and boundaries of any limitations those tools imply. What I mean by this is, for instance, my second FAWM (2008), I had no recording space whatsoever, and was limited to an acoustic guitar and a portable recorder. In 2010, I decided to forgo using guitars. This year, there is a theme: Art Against Austerity. AAA, or Triple A, whatever. But what does it mean? Well, I’m not proposing art position itself against austerity (i.e the culture of austerity that’s gripping a lot of the West), but actually uses the concept and climate of austerity to reflect on possible meanings. At the very least, to create something positive out of austerity.

Tools can often be a barrier to creativity. This year I’ll be using mostly new ones, so I’ll see how things pan out. I have new MacBook Pro, Pro Tools 10 with the Complete Production Toolkit (which I probably won’t be using for FAWM), Logic Pro (which I probably will), an apogee Duet 2, an Avid Transport controller to get my head around. Plus, an assortment of noise-making implements!

FAWM resolution: I’m going to try really hard this year to hang out on the forums, give useful feedback and get stuck in.

* * *

(1) A far looser interpretation of song is now invoked, thanks to the greater diversity and evolution that has come from the competition’s success and growth over the years.

Thanks so much to Richard Summers and the Radio Drama Revival crew for persevering, and really surveying the issues that surround a subject.

Radio Drama Revival: Episode 261 - There Is A Field, Part I aired last Friday, featuring an interview with playwright Jen Marlowe and also Aseel’s younger sister, Siwar. I’ve not heard the interviews yet myself so can’t wait to listen. Part II will air this coming Friday (I think) with a few words from me, so look out for it. I hope you enjoy Part I. If you have any comments or thoughts, send them this way or to the Radio Drama Revival website.

If you’re wondering what There Is A Field is exactly, read the info card below for more information - and check out the Radio Drama Revival podcast.

What is it?

(2011) Full-length radio drama written by Jen Marlowe and produced by Marie Tueje.

Elevator pitch

How often do we hear a first person account of what it’s like to be a Palestinian Arab living in Israel? Topical news reporting draws our attention to the anger, suspicion and frustration that exists on both sides, but what if there were a story that expressed what it feels like to be a stranger in your own land, without resorting to bombast.

There Is A Field is an radio drama which recounts the death of 17 year-old peace activist Aseel Asleh during the protests of “Black October” in 2000. Seen through the eyes of his older sister, Nardeen, it is a story of grief, trauma and reconciliation that forgoes politicising the region’s conflicts in favour of telling a more human story.

Who’s involved?

Jen Marlowe: Writer

Marie Tueje: Direction

Johanna Pestka: Nardeen

Benjamin Nathan-Serio: Aseel

Brian Reedy: Hassan

Mar Bayo Montoliu: Jamila

With Richard Cloake, Beth Trollan and Alistair Fisher

Did you know?

There Is A Field was written as a Global Theatrical Call To Action, commemorating the tenth anniversary of Aseel’s death in October 2010. Performances of There Is A Field took place throughout the month in Australia, India, Kenya, Wales, Zimbabwe, France, Israel and the US (among others).

‘Donkeysaddle Projects’ combats inhumanity through exposing the humanity of those who have been marginalized and oppressed, through platforms such as writing, film and theatre. More info: http://donkeysaddle.org

Skope magazine: Sunday Afternoon 5pm

Skope magazine: Sunday Afternoon 5pm:
A write up on a 2009 FAWM collaboration.
Fever

In that time-honoured fashion of coming “full circle”, the final offering in the Curating Everything series is in fact the oldest song on the collection, Fever. When did I write this song…? Gotta be about 2002-3. This started out as a really hippy-ish heavy drone played with footstomps and banging pots and pans,

inspired by the Stereolab song Crest, which uses only two chords and a lot of noise to great effect. I wasn’t up to the challenge, however, and after a promising start (it is mostly E major and B major), a few other chords to sneak in now and then.

Due to competition rules being amazingly tight, that’s about all I can tell you at the moment.
