York's Castle Museum

By way of introducing the following photosets. I had a delightful first look around York’s Castle Museum last Saturday, with a view to possibly using it as a case study for my MA research project looking at sound in narrative spaces. I’m still a little way off properly framing my research aims in a way that is i) interesting, ii) sufficiently narrow in scope, iii) creatively inspiring.

Castle Museum itself is built on the site of an old prison, and going through its tunnels and courtyards it is certainly a building with presence and character. The collections themselves work well as either time capsules of a particular era (I found the 60s collection unimpressive though) or specific part of popular culture (e.g. children’s toys and games, or domestic living spaces).

The following photos were taken from a section comprising about 1/5 of the total collections (less, perhaps).

The Ouse is flooded again. Amazing. Then again, since it’s apparently been the wettest April on record it shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise.

You can see the ducks are also freaked out… they literally didn’t know where to put themselves!

Had to watch this video a few times … and very slowly … to get a good handle on it. The upshot is that it should (honestly) make for a better-sounding cinematic experience, due to the fact that Dolby have finally given object-based mixing a real go. This allows sound events to be placed and moved pretty freely around an actual space, rather than the kind 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby systems that move sound events between two speakers.

I think that’s about right but if anyone wants to correct me, feel free.

Great resource for both finding interesting sounds, and uploading your own for others to use. The institute behind it is the Music Technology Group (MTG) based at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where I studied last year.

This article on the possibilities and benefits of fostering an user-led, online community gives some hard data on how and why such communities function and prosper.

Yes, all the hoopla has been about John Peel’s record collection (which is indeed fab), but there’s a lot more to be had on this portal. The philosophy and architecture behind it is explained rather well by Mo McRoberts here, and the whole “broadcaster-in-a-box” ideology does seem like a place we’ll all be landing on in the not-too-distant future.

First up is this virtual orchestra at the South Bank in London, which can go from a solitary piccolo to a full-blown orchestra, depending on how many “participants” are involved at any one time.

Judging by some of the videos on YouTube, this is a pretty old installation, but it’s still a neat idea all the same.

What Is FAWM And Why It’s Important?

If you’ve never heard of February Album Writing Month before, there’s no better time to dip your toes into the mildy addictive - music-making merry-go-round that takes place on the FAWM website. I wonder if, perhaps, in 20 years people will talk about FAWM in the same way they do about those who take an annual dip in the freezing waters of the North Sea, and annual cheese rollers.

The challenge is to write 14 songs(1) during February, though the actual “challenge” is what you make of it. This year will be my sixth taking part in the challenge. Last year I finished completed just three songs, so this year I’m hoping to do better. Far more important than “winning”, is “succeeding”, that is, being excited by whatever I happen to produce, be it on my own or with collaborators.

For me, there are no requisite tools to do the job, as long as you’re aware of the scope and boundaries of any limitations those tools imply. What I mean by this is, for instance, my second FAWM (2008), I had no recording space whatsoever, and was limited to an acoustic guitar and a portable recorder. In 2010, I decided to forgo using guitars. This year, there is a theme: Art Against Austerity. AAA, or Triple A, whatever. But what does it mean? Well, I’m not proposing art position itself against austerity (i.e the culture of austerity that’s gripping a lot of the West), but actually uses the concept and climate of austerity to reflect on possible meanings. At the very least, to create something positive out of austerity.

Tools can often be a barrier to creativity. This year I’ll be using mostly new ones, so I’ll see how things pan out. I have new MacBook Pro, Pro Tools 10 with the Complete Production Toolkit (which I probably won’t be using for FAWM), Logic Pro (which I probably will), an apogee Duet 2, an Avid Transport controller to get my head around. Plus, an assortment of noise-making implements!

FAWM resolution: I’m going to try really hard this year to hang out on the forums, give useful feedback and get stuck in.
