Five Years Ago
What were you doing five years ago, and how does that compare with what you're doing now?
Artist, writer, do-er, Austin Kleon quit his day job to go on a book tour. Me? Five years ago, I was in York, doing my MA. Right about this time I would have been finishing up an assignment on spatial audio techniques, the result of which was a sound piece that I'm still proud of to this day, Beat! Beat! Drums!
For me, in this instance, looking back provides a solid link, or bridge, between what I'm doing now, and what I hope to achieve in the future. The present is the anchor. Looking back serves to remind me that although it might appear I'm stuck in one place (or, even worse, going backward), usually I will be able to point to achievements and successes; however incremental or slight. Usually, though, the achievements are larger than I would have thought.
Of course, this won't always be the case, and there will be moments where things are unutterably shitty, usually for very clear reasons. However, until that time is upon us, we should remember where we were five years ago, and celebrate.
