There comes a time when understanding something, knowing how to do something, to operate something is not enough. As a professional, getting by on surface knowledge will, sooner or later, leave you splashing around on the surface, however elegantly. And it seems obvious if not a little cliched to say that to really understand something one needs to go deeper, away from the shallow end, away from familiar surroundings. The question is, though, what does stepping out of one's comfort zone actually mean, in practice, and how does one do it intelligently? That's the part you don't often read in books and, consequently, it's the part we really have to figure out for ourselves.
